Should I Pack Glass?

Directions: In the individual "Lunch Sack" activity, you explored the properties of different materials to decide what material would be best for your lunch sack. In "Lunch Layout" and "What's for lunch?" you started to think about what types of food you would be packing in your lunch sack.

Sometimes I put crackers (like the above picture), pretzels, nuts, and other things in glass jars to bring to school to eat at lunch. First, complete the activity "Grouping and Changing Materials" (click link) to help you sort different things as either being made of wood, metal, glass, or rubber. As you complete the activity, think about the type of items that you sort as "glass." Think about these questions as you complete the activity:

  • What things are made of wood?
  • What things are made of metal?
  • What things are made of rubber?
  • What things are made of glass?
  • Do glass things tend to be sturdy or fragile?
  • Should I bring glass containers on the field trip? Why or why not?

As you complete the activity, print and complete the "Should I Pack Glass?" worksheet (click link) (one per group). Bring the finished sheet and your "Action Plan" (one per person) to the teacher to obtain a signature.

If you chose to complete "Should I Pack Glass?" then choose and complete one more activity from the "Optional Group Activities."
