Weighing You Down
Directions: Objects can be weighted, and their sizes can be measured. When packing your lunch, you want to think about the weight of the items you are bringing because you don't want to carry a heavy lunch for the whole day.
Consider this: the average bag of flour weighs 5 pounds. If you've ever lifted a bag of flour, then you know that it feels a lot heavier than it looks. Put it this way - you wouldn't want to carry around a bag of flour all day. It'd be more realistic for you to carry about 3 pounds all day.
Your task is to create a lunch that contains a lunch box, at least two food items, and one drink item - weighing a total of 3 pounds or less.
At the back of the room you will find a digital food scale (measures pounds) and food and drink items. Assuming that your lunch container weighs about 1 pound, your job is to fill your lunch bag with 2 pounds or fewer of total drink/food items.
At the back of the classroom you will find various food and drink items, including:
Use the digital scale to weigh and record the weight of the various items. DO NOT EAT THE FOOD OR DRINK THE DRINKS. Complete the "Weighing You Down" worksheet as you complete this activity.
As you complete the activity, think about the answers to these big questions:
